History of Ponies and Snakes

There was no edition of Ponies & Snakes in 2007 since BAMA was heavily involved in organizing the MCA national show that year, and no shows in 2020, 2021 or 2022. If you think you may know why these three (3) “dark” years were necessary, you may be eligible for a free drink at the BAMA Annual Dinner. Send your answer on a postcard to the BAMA P.O. box address; no electronic submissions will be considered.

The venue for both Ponies and Snakes and The Gathering has always been Danville Livery - with one exception: The 2003 edition of Ponies and Snakes was held at the Ford dealership in Fremont. C’mon now, everybody’s allowed one mistake!

Before the name “Ponies & Snakes” was coined by the late BAMA member Don Olson, the club organized nine annual shows under the banner “The Gathering.” This was an informal display for Mustangs and Cobras at Danville Livery. It was co-hosted with a car-themed business which has been known variously as The Auto Enthusiast, Auto Affair and later The Paddock, which was in the shopping center and sponsored the commemorative ribbons which were awarded to all participants. The Gathering had a strong emphasis on the casual approach: there was limited organized parking and the event typically wrapped up around 1:00 pm.

When BAMA decided to hold a judged show in 2001, a new name was called for and Ponies and Snakes was born. For the first several years Ponies and Snakes alternated between a judged show (odd years) and a display (even years). Over time it became apparent that participants much preferred a judged show with awards and 2010 was the last display.

The commemorative ribbons were continued for the first year of Ponies and Snakes in 2001
